A graft is a surgical procedure that involves joining a healthy part of a plant, known as a scion, to the stem or root of another plant, called the rootstock. The purpose of grafting is to combine the desirable traits of both plants, such as disease resistance, fruit quality, and growth habit. The process of grafting begins by selecting healthy scions and rootstocks that are compatible with each other. The scion is typically taken from a mature tree, while the rootstock is usually a young plant that has been propagated through cuttings or tissue culture. To prepare the scion for grafting, a slanted cut is made at the base of the stem, known as the heel. The rootstock is then prepared by making a similar slanted cut at the base of the stem, known as the stock. The two cuts are then pressed together and secured with grafting tape or twine.
