Lessons are better schools than masters

In the present climate, where the world is facing unprecedented challenges, it's become increasingly clear that schools alone cannot make us better. While education is undoubtedly essential, it's the lessons we learn outside the classroom that truly shape us into better individuals. In this essay, I'll explore five reasons why lessons are more important than schools in today's world.

Firstly, lessons teach us practical skills that we can apply in our daily lives. While schools provide us with theoretical knowledge, lessons provide us with the practical skills we need to succeed. For example, learning how to cook, sew or fix things around our homes is essential for our personal growth as adults but is not typically taught in schools today due to the focus on standardized testing. Lessons, on the other hand, provide us with the opportunity to learn these practical skills from experts in the field.

Secondly, lessons provide us with real-life experiences that schools cannot replicate. While schools can provide us with textbook knowledge, lessons offer us the chance to learn through experience. For example, volunteering at a local shelter, participating in a community cleanup, or working on a farm can teach us valuable life lessons that we cannot learn in a classroom. These experiences help us develop empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility towards our communities.

Thirdly, lessons provide us with the opportunity to learn from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. While schools typically have a homogenous student body, lessons offer us the chance to learn from people from different walks of life. For example, learning from a Holocaust survivor, a war veteran, or a successful entrepreneur can provide us with insights and perspectives that we cannot learn from our textbooks. These lessons help us develop a broader worldview and a deeper appreciation for the human experience.

Fourthly, lessons provide us with the chance to learn from our mistakes. While schools typically focus on grades and test scores, lessons offer us the chance to learn from our failures. For example, learning how to swim, ride a bike, or play a musical instrument requires us to make mistakes and learn from them. These lessons help us develop resilience, perseverance, and a growth mindset.

Finally, lessons provide us with the chance to learn from our own experiences. While schools typically focus on the experiences of others, lessons offer us the chance to learn from our own experiences. For example, learning from our own mistakes, failures, and successes can provide us with insights and perspectives that we cannot learn from others. These lessons help us develop self-awareness, self-reflection, and a deeper understanding of ourselves.

In conclusion, while schools are essential for our education, lessons are more important than schools in today's world. Lessons provide us with practical skills, real-life experiences, diverse perspectives, the chance to learn from our mistakes, and the chance to learn from our own experiences. In a world facing unprecedented challenges, it's the lessons we learn outside the classroom that truly shape us into better individuals. It's time we recognize the importance of lessons and provide our students with the opportunity to learn from them. Let's make learning a lifelong journey, not just a school-based experience.

The Endless Cycle of Misinformation and Deflection: Biden, Harris, and the 2024 Campaign

For four long years, a column was being written in the press, a persistent narrative that followed President Joe Biden through his term in office. Every time Biden faced tough questions or criticism, he would pause, take a deep breath, and yell back, branding the conversation as either "misinformation" or "disinformation." It became almost a hallmark of his response—deflecting any criticism by labeling it as part of some broader, nefarious campaign to distort the truth.  This strategy came full circle the day Biden signed his name to a critical decision: his reelection announcement for 2024. By deciding to run again, Biden’s reelection bid felt like the culmination of a column that had been continuously drafted, edited, and critiqued. His familiar refrain against “misinformation” became, in essence, the core message of his defense—any challenge to his policies or leadership was dismissed as an attack not based on facts but on falsehoods. But the story didn’t end the...
